RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: TAM receptors (TYRO3, AXL, and MER) play important roles in inflammatory responses, but their effects in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) remain elucidated. We aim to evaluate the values of TAM receptors in disease severity and postoperative recurrence of CRSwNP. METHODS: We initially enrolled 160 patients with CRSwNP who were treated with functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and postoperative recurrence was evaluated during the follow-up period. Circulating TAM receptor levels were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and tissue expressions were measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunohistochemical (IHC). The relationships between TAM receptor levels and postoperative recurrence were examined. RESULTS: A total of 150 patients completed the follow-up schedule, 49 patients experienced postoperative recurrence and the remaining 101 patients were non-recurrent. In recurrent CRSwNP patients, serum levels of TAM receptors were increased compared to those in non-recurrent patients and were positively correlated with disease severity scores (P < 0.05). Circulating TYRO3 and MER were identified as potential predictors of postoperative recurrence based on receiver operating characteristics (ROC) and Kaplan-Meier plots (P < 0.05). Furthermore, tissue TAM receptor levels, as determined by both RT-PCR and IHC, were enhanced in the recurrent group than in the non-recurrent group (P < 0.05) and were predictive of postoperative recurrence (P < 0.05). Interestingly, circulating TYRO3 and MER concentrations, as well as tissue TYRO3 expression, were found to be significantly increased in patients who experienced postoperative recurrence (P < 0.05). IHC images from the same patients revealed that TAM expressions were enhanced in the recurrent tissues compared to their baseline tissue levels. CONCLUSIONS: Our laboratory results demonstrated that TAM receptors were increased in recurrent CRSwNP patients and associated with postoperative recurrence. Moreover, the new laboratory findings suggested that measuring circulating levels of TAM receptors might serve as a promising new approach to assess disease progression and predict the risk of postoperative recurrence.

Waardenburg Syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic disorder that leads to congenital hearing loss and pigmentation defects. Microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) is one of its significant pathogenic genes. Despite the comprehensive investigation in animal models, the pathogenic mechanism is still poorly described in humans due to difficulties accessing embryonic tissues. In this work, we used induced pluripotent stem cells derived from a WS patient carrying a heterozygous mutation in the MITF gene c.626A>T (p.His209Leu), and differentiated toward melanocyte lineage, which is the most affected cell type involved in WS. Compared with the wild-type cell line, the MITFmut cell line showed a reduced expression of the characteristic melanocyte-related genes and a lesser proportion of mature, fully pigmented melanosomes. The transcriptome analysis also revealed widespread gene expression changes at the melanocyte stage in the MITFmut cell line. The differentially expressed genes were enriched in melanogenesis and cell proliferation-related pathways. Interestingly, ion transport-related genes also showed a significant difference in MITFmut -induced melanocytes, indicating that the MITF mutant may lead to the dysfunction of potassium channels and transporters produced by intermediate cells in the cochlea, further causing the associated phenotype of deafness. Altogether, our study provides valuable insights into how MITF mutation affects WS patients, which might result in defective melanocyte development and the related phenotype based on the patient-derived iPSC model.

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common allergic disease, and SLIT has shown effectiveness as a treatment method. This study focuses on the evaluation of serum TAM receptor tyrosine kinases (TYRO3, AXL, and MER) levels as potential indicators of disease severity and predictive markers for sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) responsiveness in AR patients. Methods: A total of 160 AR subjects, including 40 mild AR (MAR) and 120 moderate-severe AR (MSAR) patients, and 40 healthy controls (HC) were recruited. Serum concentrations of TYRO3, AXL, and MER were measured and their relationships with disease severity were examined. In the MSAR group, 102 patients underwent SLIT, and the early efficacy was evaluated. The correlations between the baseline serum concentrations of TYRO3, AXL, and MER and the early responsiveness of SLIT were analyzed. Results: Serum concentrations of TYRO3, AXL, and MER were significantly reduced in AR patients, particularly in those MSAR subjects. Correlation analysis results indicated that serum TYRO3 and MER levels were negatively correlated with the visual analog scale (VAS) and the total nasal symptom score (TNSS). After one year of follow-up, 80 AR patients completed the treatment and were divided into effective and ineffective groups. Serum baseline levels of TYRO3 and MER were found to be lower in the effective group compared to the ineffective group. Additionally, there was a significant increase in serum TYRO3 and MER levels compared to baseline levels. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis revealed that circulating TYRO3 and MER had potential values for reflecting AR severity and predicting early SLIT responsiveness. Conclusion: Serum TYRO3 and MER concentrations were decreased in AR patients and negatively associated with disease severity. Circulating TYRO3 and MER seem to be promising indicators for monitoring the efficacy of SLIT in AR patients.

OBJECTIVES: Branchio-oto syndrome (BOS) primarily manifests as hearing loss, preauricular pits, and branchial defects. EYA1 is the most common pathogenic gene, and splicing mutations account for a substantial proportion of cases. However, few studies have addressed the structural changes in the protein caused by splicing mutations and potential pathogenic factors, and several studies have shown that middle-ear surgery has limited effectiveness in improving hearing in these patients. BOS has also been relatively infrequently reported in the Chinese population. This study explored the genetic etiology in the family of a proband with BOS and provided clinical treatment to improve the patient's hearing. METHODS: We collected detailed clinical features and peripheral blood samples from the patients and unaffected individuals within the family. Pathogenic mutations were identified by whole-exome sequencing and cosegregation analysis and classified according to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics guidelines. Alternative splicing was verified through a minigene assay. The predicted three-dimensional protein structure and biochemical experiments were used to investigate the pathogenicity of the mutation. The proband underwent middle-ear surgery and was followed up at 1 month and 6 months postoperatively to monitor auditory improvement. RESULTS: A novel heterozygous EYA1 splicing variant (c.1050+4 A>C) was identified and classified as pathogenic (PVS1(RNA), PM2, PP1). Skipping of exon 11 of the EYA1 pre-mRNA was confirmed using a minigene assay. This mutation may impair EYA1-SIX1 interactions, as shown by an immunoprecipitation assay. The EYA1-Mut protein exhibited cellular mislocalization and decreased protein expression in cytological experiments. Middle-ear surgery significantly improved hearing loss caused by bone-conduction abnormalities in the proband. CONCLUSION: We reported a novel splicing variant of EYA1 in a Chinese family with BOS and revealed the potential molecular pathogenic mechanism. The significant hearing improvement observed in the proband after middle-ear surgery provides a reference for auditory rehabilitation in similar patients.

The ELMOD3 gene is implicated in causing autosomal recessive/dominant non-syndromic hearing loss in humans. However, the etiology has yet to be completely elucidated. In this study, we generated a patient-derived iPSC line carrying ELMOD3 c.512A>G mutation. In addition, the patient-derived iPSC line was corrected by CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing system. Then we applied RNA sequencing profiling to compare the patient-derived iPSC line with different controls, respectively (the healthy sibling-derived iPSCs and the CRISPR/Cas9 corrected iPSCs). Functional enrichment and PPI network analysis revealed that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were enriched in the gene ontology, such as sensory epithelial development, intermediate filament cytoskeleton organization, and the regulation of ion transmembrane transport. Our current work provided a new tool for studying how disruption of ELMOD3 mechanistically drives hearing loss.

In manufacturing, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are widely used on image sensor data for data-driven process monitoring and quality prediction. However, as purely data-driven models, CNNs do not integrate physical measures or practical considerations into the model structure or training procedure. Consequently, CNNs' prediction accuracy can be limited, and model outputs may be hard to interpret practically. This study aims to leverage manufacturing domain knowledge to improve the accuracy and interpretability of CNNs in quality prediction. A novel CNN model, named Di-CNN, was developed that learns from both design-stage information (such as working condition and operational mode) and real-time sensor data, and adaptively weighs these data sources during model training. It exploits domain knowledge to guide model training, thus improving prediction accuracy and model interpretability. A case study on resistance spot welding, a popular lightweight metal-joining process for automotive manufacturing, compared the performance of (1) a Di-CNN with adaptive weights (the proposed model), (2) a Di-CNN without adaptive weights, and (3) a conventional CNN. The quality prediction results were measured with the mean squared error (MSE) over sixfold cross-validation. Model (1) achieved a mean MSE of 6.8866 and a median MSE of 6.1916, Model (2) achieved 13.6171 and 13.1343, and Model (3) achieved 27.2935 and 25.6117, demonstrating the superior performance of the proposed model.

Mercury is a global pollutant. The mercury exchanges between vegetation and the atmosphere are important for the global mercury cycle. Grassland ecosystems occupy more than 25% of the global land area and have different succession processes and ecological functions. The current research regarding mercury exchanges between forests and the atmosphere have attracted much attention, but the research regarding grasslands tends to be rare. To reveal the characteristics of mercury exchanges in grasslands, this study conducted field in-situ monitoring experiments in a Leymus meadow grassland regions of the Songnen Plains in northeastern China. The exchange flux values of the GEM (gaseous element mercury) between the plants and the atmosphere were measured using a dynamic flux bag method (DFB). The experiments were conducted for the purpose of assessing the mercury flux levels between the vegetation and the atmosphere in a typical Leymus chinensis meadow. The goal was to further the understanding of the change characteristics and influential factors and to describe the source and sink actions and dynamics between the grassland vegetation and the atmosphere. The diurnal variation characteristics were as follows: High during the day and low at night, with peaks generally appearing at noon. The growing period was characterized by absorption peaks of atmospheric mercury by the plants. The breeding period was characterized by the peak release of atmospheric mercury by the plants. The change characteristics were as follows: During the growing period, the duration of the plants in a mercury absorption state exceeded 96.5%, which was represented as the net sink of the atmospheric mercury. During the breeding period, the time of mercury release ranged between 46.4% and 66.8%, making the breeding period the net source of atmospheric mercury. The results of this study's analysis indicated that each environmental factor was correlated with the mercury flux, and the environmental factors had different effects on the mercury flux during the different stages of plant growth. The atmospheric mercury concentration levels were the main factor during the growing period. Atmospheric humidity was the main factor during the breeding period. Solar radiation was the decisive factor during the entire experimental period.

The use of polymer insulation to mitigate galvanic corrosion was examined for bolted joints of AZ31B Mg alloy and carbon fiber-reinforced composite. To assess the corrosion behaviors of bolted joints with and without polymer insulation, solution immersion and salt spray exposure (ASTM B117) tests were conducted, and the corrosion depths and volumes were determined for the joint specimens after the tests. The polymer-insulated bolted joints exhibited much lower corrosion depths and volumes, highlighting the effective mitigation of galvanic corrosion. The reductions of joint strength in the post-corrosion joint specimens were relatively small (up to ~10%) in the polymer-insulated group but greater (up to 90%) in the group with no insulation. Cross-sectional characterization of post-corrosion joints with polymer insulation revealed local pits developed on AZ31B under galvanic influence, indicating that limited galvanic attack (that did not decrease the joining integrity significantly) could still occur during a long salt spray exposure (~1264 h) owing to the permeation of an aqueous corrosive medium.

Friction stir processing is a novel solid-state process to modify microstructures and their properties by intense, localized plastic deformation. However, little research has been reported for microstructure evolutions of advanced high-strength steels during the process. The present work focuses on the study of transient microstructure changes and local mechanical properties for friction stir spot processed dual-phase (DP) 980 MPa grade steel (DP980) under different peak temperatures. A pinless silicon nitride ceramic tool was used to produce relatively simple material deformation and flow near the tool. Friction stir spot processed steel samples were characterized by optical and electron microscopies. Furthermore, Vickers microhardness and nano-indentation measurements were used to study local mechanical properties for correlation with microstructures. A swallow layer of refined grains (<0.6 µm) was obtained with a low peak temperature (under 400 °C), whereas higher peak temperatures (>Ac1) led to a change in grain size with different microstructures (fine-grained DP or martensite). Electron back-scattered diffraction characterizations revealed a large deformation in the as-received microstructures (mixture of ferrite and tempered martensite) induced by friction stir spot processing, leading to recrystallization and grain refinement around the stirred zone. Also, nano-indentation measurements showed a higher hardness than the hardness of the as-received DP980. Friction stir processing with different process conditions effectively changed microstructures and local mechanical properties.

Premature creep failures at the intercritical heat affected zone (ICHAZ) of creep-resistant steel weldments have been frequently reported. However, the creep degradation mechanism of different microstructure constituents in ICHAZ is complicated and needs further clarification. In this work, Grade 91 steel was intercritically heat-treated at a temperature (860 °C) between the critical temperatures AC1 and AC3, and a correlation between microstructure and mechanical properties of the heat-treated specimen was built. The effects of austenitization and tempering resulting from the intercritical treatment (IT) differentiated the local strain energies between the two microstructure constituents: newly transformed martensite (NTM) and over-tempered martensite (OTM). The formation of NTM grains led to a hardness increase from 247 HV0.5 in the base metal to 332 HV0.5 in the IT specimen. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) increased from 739 MPa in the base metal to 1054 MPa in the IT specimen. Extensive growth of the OTM grains and rapid recovery of NTM grains took place simultaneously in the IT specimen during a typical tempering at 760 °C. These microstructure degradations led to a lowered hardness of 178 HV0.5, a reduced UTS of 596 MPa, and a poor creep resistance with a minimum creep strain rate of 0.49 %/h at 650 °C in an IT + tempering (ITT) specimen.

Transient distortion of thin plate in the welding process usually has a complicated mode and large magnitude. Quantitative measurement and prediction of full-field distortion are challenging and rarely reported up to now. In this study, the out-of-plane distortion of a thin plate during the Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding process was measured using the digital image correlation (DIC) method. A simulation model based on thermal elastic⁻plastic finite element method (FEM) and DIC measured geometric imperfection were developed for accurate prediction of the transient welding distortion. The numerical results and experimental data agreed very well in both out-of-plane deformation modes and magnitudes of the plate at different stages of welding. The maximum out-of-plane distortion was larger than 4 mm during welding which can cause instability of arc length and heat input. The distance change between welding torch and plate surface was investigated under different initial deflections of the plate before welding. The plate with flat geometry shows the minimum transient and final gap change. In addition, the relationship between heat input and welding distortion was clarified through a series of numerical analyses. Optimization of welding heat input can be performed based on numerical results to avoid excessive welding distortion.

In situ neutron scattering is a powerful tool to reveal materials atomic structural response such as phase transformation, lattice straining, and texture under external stimuli. The advent of a high flux neutron source such as the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) allows fast measurement in even non-equilibrium conditions, i.e., phase transformation in steels. However, the commercial fast heating apparatus such as commercial physical simulation equipment is not designed for in situ neutron scattering, which limits its application to in situ materials research by using neutrons. Here we present a resistive heating gas enclosure loadframe (RHEGAL) for non-equilibrium phase transformation studies by using in situ neutron scattering, which takes the advantage of high flux neutron sources like SNS. RHEGAL enables fast resistive heating of metal samples to 1200 °C at a rate up to 60 °C/s in an inert atmosphere. It provides both horizontal and vertical positions for scattering optimization. The mechanical loading capability also allows in situ high temperature tension above the oxidation temperature limit. The optimized translucent neutron scattering window by silicon allows both reflection and transmission measurements, making this equipment applicable for neutron diffraction, small angle scattering, and imaging. To demonstrate the fast heating capability, the phase transformations of an example of advanced high strength steel heated at 3 °C/s and 30 °C/s were measured with the VULCAN engineering diffractometer, and the different phase transformation kinetics by neutron diffraction were presented.

In coastal China, the exotic invasive Spartina alterniflora is preventing the establishment of native mangroves. The use of exotic species, control of exotic plant invasion, and restoration of native plant communities are timely research issues. We used exotic Sonneratia apetala Buch.-Ham and S. caseolaris (L.) Engl. to control invasive Spartina alterniflora Loisel through replacement control for five years, which concurrently promoted the restoration of native mangroves. This process includes three stages. I: In a mangrove area invaded by S. alterniflora, exotic S. apetala and S. caseolaris grew rapidly due to their relatively fast-growing character and an allelopathic effect. II: Fast-growing S. apetala and S. caseolaris eradicate S. alterniflora through shading and allelopathy. III: The growth of native mangrove was promoted because exotic plant seedlings cannot regenerate in the understory shade, whereas native mesophytic mangrove plants seedlings can grow; when the area experiences extreme low temperatures in winter or at other times, S. apetala dies, and native mangrove species grow to restore the communities. This model has important implications for addressing the worldwide problems of "how to implement the ecological control of invasion using exotic species" and "how to concurrently promote native community restoration during the control of exotic invasion".

Nanoinks are currently a topic of heightened interest with respect to low temperature bonding processes and printable electronics. We have developed an innovative polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-stabilized Ag nanoplate ink amenable to very strong low temperature packaging, and investigated the relationship between bonding strength and electrical conductivity post-bonding. PVP shell plastic deformations observed in failure microcracks with the formation of PVP nanofibers, revealed bonding strength at low temperatures (<250 °C) was primarily due to adhesive bonding. It is found that, utilizing photonic sintering, ∼ 70 °C reduction of transformation temperature from adhesive to metallic bonding was achieved compared to that of thermal sintering. A numerical simulation was developed to better understand the influences of the light-induced heat generation, which demonstrated near-infrared light can facilitate sintering. Bonding strengths of 27 MPa were achieved at room temperatures, and 29.4 MPa at 210 °C with photonic sintering. Moreover, the anisotropic resistivity was observed with different thermal dependences. These results demonstrate Ag nanoplate inks have potential for low temperature 3D interconnections in lead-free microcircuits, flexible electronic packaging, and diverse sensing applications.

We report an in-situ neutron diffraction study of a large format pouch battery cell. The succession of Li-Graphite intercalation phases was fully captured under an 1C charge-discharge condition (i.e., charge to full capacity in 1 hour). However, the lithiation and dilithiation pathways are distinctively different and, unlike in slowing charging experiments with which the Li-Graphite phase diagram was established, no LiC24 phase was found during charge at 1C rate. Approximately 75 mol. % of the graphite converts to LiC6 at full charge, and a lattice dilation as large as 4% was observed during a charge-discharge cycle. Our work demonstrates the potential of in-situ, time and spatially resolved neutron diffraction study of the dynamic chemical and structural changes in "real-world" batteries under realistic cycling conditions, which should provide microscopic insights on degradation and the important role of diffusion kinetics in energy storage materials.

Lianas are important components of tropical forests and have significant impacts on the diversity, structure and dynamics of tropical forests. The present study documented the liana flora in a Chinese tropical region. Species richness, abundance, size-class distribution and spatial patterns of lianas were investigated in three 1-ha plots in tropical seasonal rain forests in Xishuangbanna, SW China. All lianas with > or = 2 cm diameter at breast height (dbh) were measured, tagged and identified. A total of 458 liana stems belonging to 95 species (ranging from 38 to 50 species/ha), 59 genera and 32 families were recorded in the three plots. The most well-represented families were Loganiaceae, Annonceae, Papilionaceae, Apocynaceae and Rhamnaceae. Papilionaceae (14 species recorded) was the most important family in the study forests. The population density, basal area and importance value index (IVI) varied greatly across the three plots. Strychnos cathayensis, Byttneria grandifolia and Bousigonia mekongensis were the dominant species in terms of IVI across the three plots. The mean aboveground biomass of lianas (3 396 kg/ha) accounted for 1.4% of the total community above-ground biomass. The abundance, diversity and biomass of lianas in Xishuangbanna tropical seasonal rain forests are lower than those in tropical moist and wet forests, but higher than those in tropical dry forests. This study provides new data on lianas from a geographical region that has been little-studied. Our findings emphasize that other factors beyond the amount and seasonality of precipitation should be included when considering the liana abundance patterns across scales.

All lianas with = 2 cm diameter at breast height (dbh) were measured, tagged and identified. A total of 458 liana stems belonging to 95 species (ranging from 38 to 50 species/ha), 59 genera and 32 families were recorded in the three plots. The most well-represented families were Loganiaceae, Annonceae, Papilionaceae, Apocynaceae and Rhamnaceae. Papilionaceae (14 species recorded) was the most important family in the study forests. The population density, basal area and importance value index (IVI) varied greatly across the three plots. Strychnos cathayensis, Byttneria grandifolia and Bousigonia mekongensis were the dominant species in terms of IVI across the three plots. The mean aboveground biomass of lianas (3 396 kg/ha) accounted for 1.4% of the total community aboveground biomass. The abundance, diversity and biomass of lianas in Xishuangbanna tropical seasonal rain forests are lower than those in tropical moist and wet forests, but higher than those in tropical dry forests. This study provides new data on lianas from a geographical region that has been little-studied. Our findings emphasize that other factors beyond the amount and seasonality of precipitation should be included when considering the liana abundance patterns across scales. Rev. Biol. Las lianas son componentes importantes de los bosques tropicales y tienen importantes impactos en la diversidad, la estructura y la dinámica de los bosques tropicales. El presente estudio documenta la flora de lianas en una región tropical estacional china. La riqueza de especies, abundancia, clases de tamaño y patrones espaciales de distribución de las lianas fueron investigados en tres parcelas de una hectárea de bosque tropical estacional lluvioso, en Xishuangbanna, SW China. Todas las lianas con = 2 cm de diámetro a la altura del pecho (DAP) fueron medidas, etiquetadas e identificadas. Un total de 458 tallos de lianas pertenecientes a 95 especies (que van de 38 a 50 especies/ha), 59 géneros y 32 familias se registraron en las tres parcelas. Las familias mejor representadas fueron Loganiaceae, Annonceae, Papilionaceae, Apocynaceae y Rhamnaceae. Papilionaceae (14 especies registradas) fue la de mayor importancia. La densidad de población, área basal y el índice de valor de importancia (IVI) varió mucho a través de las tres parcelas. Bacterial community structure was studied in humus and mineral soils of evergreen broad-leaved forests in Ailaoshan and Xishuangbanna, representing subtropical and tropical ecosystems, respectively, in south-west China using sequence analysis and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of 16S rRNA genes. Clone sequences affiliated to Acidobacteria were retrieved as the predominant bacterial phylum in both forest soils, followed by those affiliated to members of the Proteobacteria, Planctomycete and Verrucomicrobia. Despite higher floristic richness at the Xishuangbanna forest than at the Ailaoshan forest, soil at Xishuangbanna harbored a distinctly high relative abundance of Acidobacteria-affiliated sequences (80% of the total clones), which led to a lower overall bacterial diversity than at Ailaoshan. Bacterial communities in humus and mineral soils of the two forests appeared to be well differentiated, based on 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, and correlations were found between the bacterial T-RFLP community patterns and the organic carbon and nutrient contents of the soil samples. The data reveal that Acidobacteria dominate soil bacterial communities in the evergreen broad-leaved forests studied here and suggest that bacterial diversity may be influenced by soil carbon and nutrient levels, but is not related to floristic richness along the climatic gradient from subtropical to tropical forests in south-west China.

In order to protect rainforests, change the present Amomum villosum cultivation model, and explore the possibility of cultivating A. villosum under secondary forest, a comparative study was made on the growth and fruit yield of A. villosum cultivated under tropical wet seasonal rainforest and secondary forest at Xishuangbanna. The results showed that A. villosum cultivation had a significant effect on rainforest biomass and net productivity, but no effect on secondary forest. Under both rainforest and secondary forest, the order of plant density and biomass, from big to small, was vigorous plant, senescent plant, seedling, and shoot. The sum of shoot and seedlings was 3.95 and 1.66 times of senescent plant under rainforest and secondary forest, respectively, which meant that A. villosum could maintain population stability. Under rainforest, many of A. villosum seedlings were poorly growing old ones, and most of them could not grow and develop normally. The density and biomass of vigorous plant were not significantly different under rainforest and secondary forest, but those of shoot, seedling and senescent plant were significantly higher under secondary forest than under rainforest, suggesting that A. villosum rejuvenescence was faster under secondary forest. A. villosum fruit yield was 78.068 kg x hm(-2) in secondary forest, slightly higher than that in rainforest. It was worthwhile to notice that A. villosum yield was very low, its stem biomass ratio was very high (above 0.6), and the fruit biomass ratio was extremely low (about 0.01), which showed that the yield-increasing potency of A. villosum was great through improving biomass partition between fruit and stem. The biomass and canopy coverage of secondary forest was lower than those of rainforest, but the soil water content of secondary forest was similar to that of rainforest, which was favorable to the growth and development of A. villosum. The results presented above indicated that A. villosum could be cultivated in secondary forest.

Investigations on the dynamics of Amomum villosum growth and its fruit yield cultivated under tropical ravine rainforest and secondary forest at different elevations in Xishuangbanna showed that the yield of A. villosum was influenced by the site age, sun light level of understorey, and water stress in dry season. The fruit yield and mature plant density decreased with increasing age of the A. villosum site. The fruit yield increased with sun light level when the light level in understorey was under 35% of full sun light (P < 0.05). The fruit yield at the lower site by stream was significantly higher than that at upper site (P < 0.05). The yield difference between ravine rainforest and secondary forest was not significant. Planned cultivation of A. villosum in the secondary forest of the shifting cultivation land by ravine from 800-1000 m elevation instead of customary cultivation in the ravine rainforest, could not only resolve the problem of the effect of light deficiency in understorey and water stress in the dry season on A. villosum fruit yield, but also be useful to protect the tropical ravine rain forest.
